Notice how it blooms when they get home? I do not understand why it is so heavily overlooked that it's not so much the trauma, but it's being totally isolated from other people by the experience. They DO NOT GET IT. If you've experienced some of the freshest horrors humanity has to offer and people are bitching about normal things, THAT fucks you up. It's incredibly hard not to feel resentment or totally alone. Vietnam veterans talk about how they got sent home, alone, piecemeal, unlike WW2 veterans who had long train and ship rides, usually with the people they fought with, and as hard as it was for the latter, the pain didn't set in until they got OFF and had to go back to "normal" life, but at least, unlike the former, they had some time to decompress with a group of people who understood and had shared the experience, and it also made it much easier for them to have reunions and the like. These things (including how society treated them) had a huge impact on their ability to overcome and re-integrate. But everyone just focuses on the trauma trauma trauma and not the SOCIETY.
